Working Treatment - Post 2

Note to self – think of rhythm of visual pacing – music video vs TV episode vs feature length film
Examples: David Bowie music videos, anime influence, Hideaki Anno, pre-renderred video games.

NOTE: if you want anything reviewed by classmates, send it to Scott Northrup before April 7th, 2009. Talk to Scott on showing animatic to see what he has to say & what he wants to show


Characters:

red riding hood
colors:
red clothing or hoodie (what kind of red and why? What does it represent?) How about a green hoodie for contrast (and to represent life)? (yellow was used in The Village and Coraline)
props:
cellphone - a communication device used to inform the audience on her situation (think of ED theme of Dragonball – Romantic Ageraeryo)
iPod - transition device from Granny’s scene to RRhood.
Teen idol magazine - introduces the wolf character and her possible interest in him (like in eureka 7 episode 1 and 2nd ED theme || environment shots in Hideaki Anno style)
character description:
a thirteen year old girl who's forced by her parents to visit her grandmother on a weekend. She would rather be spending her time hanging out with her friends at the mall, but her parents seem a bit strick, so she can't or doesn't want to go through rebellion (just yet).
Sets:
Bus - A state of limbo for RRHood while she waits for her stop. It’s her introduction into the storyline, where she gets let off to an alleyway that leads off to alternate woods world (like in the first story of Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams).

City – she wanders through it before entering the woods. (Civilization – everything is under control)

Woods - follows a manmade path, down the woods, where she eventually bumps into the wolf, who is in need of medical aid. She blushes and faints before she makes a cell phone call.

Colors: Offset green and yellow?
concept: David Bowie – I’m afraid of Americans (exaggerated paranoia) + Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs (shepherd with his little lamb (the pet dog from the movie) – the way this character is reclusive while planning for his next victim to skin + L from Death Note
Props:
A little pet lamb who he loves a little too much
Sets:
Panic room-has a set row of surveillance monitors which he uses in a voyeurism among the different characters and environments. He stays reclusive and distant from it all, but gets sucked into the action by the little pet lamb that runs away and forces him to search for it.
Woods – finds the bodies of RRhood and Wolf, and decides to make a call.

Pet lamb
Colors: white for innocence and playfulness
Concept: side-kick to BWCW, that’s a playful joyous little thing. Think of the Buffalo Bill’s pet dog from Silence of the Lambs + the robustness or calmness of an actual lamb + toy pet (usually rare dog breeds)

Sets:
Panic room
City? Maybe it encounters RRHood, distracting her to follow it, and it heads off into an alley, leading her into a mysterious woods.
Woods

wolf
Colors: blue? Grey?
concept: lives in nature but is still cool (first shot in Please Save My Earth – boy in a wheat field).
is under drug influence during his screen time (urban hippie)?. Wears a hoodie to hide identity to audience, gets revealed later by RRhood when she pulls it away to reveal his true identity.

sets:
woods - sitting at a tree chilling watching the world around him. He sees the ginger bread man run past him screaming. It takes him a moment to conceive what just happened. His stomach growls, so he gets up and starts looking for food, in the direction of the gingerbread man.
Hospital – wakes up in bed to see a doctor at the end with a pair of authorities.

Granny
Colors: dried blood when perceived by ginger.
concept
normal old woman who is getting ready for her granddaughter (the granny in True Blood)

props:
old portable radio || an old dial knob 13” inch television set used to connect with each character’s world by each channel. Use in background of set-up scene. Use this in scene at the end of gingers escape.
Kitchen knife - used for decapitating gingerbread men who come to life (think of Indianna Jones boulder scene).
Forbidden cook book – to start of the story as a pre-cautionary warning for the audience. (audio from a radio or television can be played during this shot). Has dust when it first appears.
Old fashion fridge – has pictures and cards from RRhood to establish their relationship.
Rotary Telephone – to contact RRHood end the end.

Kitchen – ginger running away from danger
06 - Woods – ginger runs pass a stoned wolf who realizes he’s hungry. Ginger is running like a maniac before it trips over to find something.
07 - City Bus Stop – RRhood gets let off at her stop. She walks through a city until a cute little lamb crosses her path.
Alley way – she follows the lamb
08 - Panic room – bwcw notices the lamb on his monitor surveillance. He looks to his right notices the door is open and he freaks out before deciding to look for his lost lamb.
09 - Woods – wolf encounters ginger. Ginger freaks out and pulls a revolver and shoots the wolf mortally injuring him. RRHood hears the gunshot and worries about the lamb and heads towards the source, while ginger runs away from the scene of the crime.
10- Bwcw may be struggling with the sunlight as he’s walking through the forest, he may put on a pair of sunglasses to cope against the sunlight.
11 - RRhood finds the wolf’s mortally wounded body; he is shot and needs medical attention. She pulls out her cell phone, but before she makes a call for an ambulance, she checks the body to see if the victim is still alive.
12 - Hospital – ending scene with RRhood and wolf. RRhood gets a call from Granny telling her that she’s late and needs to get there now. She leaves in a panic like she’s about to get grounded. The wolf is in a daze, but unluckily for him there’s a pair of authorities at his bedside where he’s been drug tested without his consent while unconscious.

14 - Woods – ginger still wandering the woods and encounters lamb. Ginger has no line of defenses and get eaten by lamb. BWCW finds lamb, picks him up, “where have you been?” lamb answers “mehhhh~” as bwcw carries lamb away from camera, we see the lambs underbelly between the arms of bwcw. Zoom in closer on lambs underbelly to see something glowing, and to reveal the lambs body being processed.


Story structure/outline:

Opening credits with introduction of characters (maybe using a forbidden recipe book?).

Starts off with Granny taking out an old dusty recipe book and puts it on the kitchen counter. She blows off dust to reveal a bunch of seals, warning the audience the dangers of using this book. She struggles with it while the camera cuts to environment shots. We see a fridge with pictures and cards from RRhood and Granny, establishing their relationship.
Cut to extreme close-up of her finally opening the book by ripping it.
She flips through the pages: a title page, table of contents, a page describing how to make a gingerbread man
Have a lithograph picture of a girl sitting lying along the page and use it as a transition to RRhood’s scene.

Metaphors with environments:

Bus/Train – State of limbo – represent boredom mood of a young teenager, waiting to get from point A to point B. This mode of transportation is connected to a network, and is a transition from the civilized world of order and predictability to the woods of the unknown and subconscious.

City – civilized society, represents the sacrifice we make in order to live safely among one another.

Telephone lines – a symbol of a long distance connection

Panic room – the ever omnipresent viewer that watches but refuses to take action or interact with what’s in front of them.

Woods – a state of the unknown. The thing we once feared before the rise of civilization, anything can happen in the woods, and no one can truly consider it safe, contain it, or keep it controlled (except maybe as a park?).

1950s kitchen – where things get chopped up and served for consumption.

stove/oven – a source of creation mainly for food

alley – the middle ground between the city and woods, a transition path that’s leads into the unknown, the woods.

Hospital- a place of misfortune and bad news


Colors:
Treatment - Instead of applying color on stageset or on characters to mean something, I might render characters and backgrounds normally, but have a post-editing to tint the picture for color themes for each environment/character.

Hospital – greens and blues? Desaturated white and blue? (look at color treatment on ER to get some referencing ideas)

Opposite – black and saturated orange (Halloween colors)

City – desaturated greys

Opposite – saturated colors – similar what’s scene in French films

Woods – beer bottle green and dark blue

Opposites – Bright Red and reflector orange

Panic room – dark blue room due to the character living in darkness

Opposite – neon orange

RRhood and Train – rose/pink/red – a girl in her youth who is looking for love.

Opposite - Zombie film green

Granny – yellow & green – something sick & and disturbing is going on while Granny is trying to be cheerful knowing that her grand daughter is visiting

Opposite – purple & red

Stove – Darkness/Black the unknown

Opposite - white



Scene ideas:
-creation of gingerbread man inside the oven (RE2 + akira mutation scene + star wars op)
-gets taken out of oven (reference to martyr position?)
-why does the granny have to make the gingerbread man? Is it RRhood’s favorite cookie? Relate gingerbread man with RRhood, maybe while she’s on her cellphone she mentions it. Maybe granny wants to try a new recipe for ginger while she comes over to help her out.
-Have a warning of needing to decapitate ginger before they get up to run away and maybe something extra at the bottom of the page that doesn’t get revealed.
-BWCW is in a panic room watching his computer monitors (like L from Death Note) while the lamb is frolicking in the forward ground.
-before RRhood enters the woods have some sort of sign (similar in the Silent Hill movie)
-what are the colors for the props relating to communication? What the colors are for props, what do they represent?
-have cellphone go off before end of scene with RRhood and wolf?
-off-tune sirens from ambulance?
-Have cellphone go off in beginning of RRhood scene 01
-screen wipe transition with a computer circuit board inbetween representing technology with the characters – one huge network. Life on a circuit board.
-F.U.C.K. – that’s when you know things are NOT okay~
-the wire network pattern on a circuit board can be assimilated in the structure of tree branches
-if everything were connected like a network, think of things that relate to this theme: telephone lines, maps for subway systems (insert characters names for destinations), circuit boards, tree branches, lightening bolts
-the woods can represent the network between people and the common ground for all the characters to meet up for their out-of-control occurrences
-the subway or train is a metaphor for the state of limbo we’re in when waiting to connect from point A to point B. all trains and subways are linked together in some network form, and this can be associated with the connections between from city to forest
-a panic room is a network in a way of connecting visual landmarks to one common place for a viewer to see
-telephone or phone lines deal with audio connections traveling along long distances to reach an ear for a connective desire.
-radio or televisions are mass populous forms of communication, where things are localized in context for a massive audience for understand and register to.
-rhythm of intro similar to GITS op (with title credits) with characters granny, ginger, and RRhood? How do these three events going on simultaneously relate? What do they have in common in the theme of “beginning”?
-what is it you want the establishing shot to establish?
-they’re all related how?
-what do I hope to say to the audience with it? Connection
action in film that represents connection, and reiterate it
