Note to self – think of rhythm of visual pacing – music video vs TV episode vs feature length film
Examples: David Bowie music videos, anime influence, Hideaki Anno, pre-renderred video games.
NOTE: if you want anything reviewed by classmates, send it to Scott Northrup before April 7th, 2009. Talk to Scott on showing animatic to see what he has to say & what he wants to show
Characters:
red riding hood
colors:
red clothing or hoodie (what kind of red and why? What does it represent?) How about a green hoodie for contrast (and to represent life)? (yellow was used in The Village and Coraline)
props:
cellphone - a communication device used to inform the audience on her situation (think of ED theme of Dragonball – Romantic Ageraeryo)
iPod - transition device from Granny’s scene to RRhood.
Teen idol magazine - introduces the wolf character and her possible interest in him (like in eureka 7 episode 1 and 2nd ED theme || environment shots in Hideaki Anno style)
character description:
a thirteen year old girl who's forced by her parents to visit her grandmother on a weekend. She would rather be spending her time hanging out with her friends at the mall, but her parents seem a bit strick, so she can't or doesn't want to go through rebellion (just yet).
Sets:
Bus - A state of limbo for RRHood while she waits for her stop. It’s her introduction into the storyline, where she gets let off to an alleyway that leads off to alternate woods world (like in the first story of Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams).
City – she wanders through it before entering the woods. (Civilization – everything is under control)
Woods - follows a manmade path, down the woods, where she eventually bumps into the wolf, who is in need of medical aid. She blushes and faints before she makes a cell phone call.
Hospital
Bwcw
Colors: Offset green and yellow?
concept: David Bowie – I’m afraid of Americans (exaggerated paranoia) + Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs (shepherd with his little lamb (the pet dog from the movie) – the way this character is reclusive while planning for his next victim to skin + L from Death Note
Props:
A little pet lamb who he loves a little too much
Sets:
Panic room-has a set row of surveillance monitors which he uses in a voyeurism among the different characters and environments. He stays reclusive and distant from it all, but gets sucked into the action by the little pet lamb that runs away and forces him to search for it.
Woods – finds the bodies of RRhood and Wolf, and decides to make a call.
Pet lamb
Colors: white for innocence and playfulness
Concept: side-kick to BWCW, that’s a playful joyous little thing. Think of the Buffalo Bill’s pet dog from Silence of the Lambs + the robustness or calmness of an actual lamb + toy pet (usually rare dog breeds)
Sets:
Panic room
City? Maybe it encounters RRHood, distracting her to follow it, and it heads off into an alley, leading her into a mysterious woods.
Woods
wolf
Colors: blue? Grey?
concept: lives in nature but is still cool (first shot in Please Save My Earth – boy in a wheat field).
is under drug influence during his screen time (urban hippie)?. Wears a hoodie to hide identity to audience, gets revealed later by RRhood when she pulls it away to reveal his true identity.
sets:
woods - sitting at a tree chilling watching the world around him. He sees the ginger bread man run past him screaming. It takes him a moment to conceive what just happened. His stomach growls, so he gets up and starts looking for food, in the direction of the gingerbread man.
Hospital – wakes up in bed to see a doctor at the end with a pair of authorities.
Granny
Colors: dried blood when perceived by ginger.
concept
normal old woman who is getting ready for her granddaughter (the granny in True Blood)
props:
old portable radio || an old dial knob 13” inch television set used to connect with each character’s world by each channel. Use in background of set-up scene. Use this in scene at the end of gingers escape.
Kitchen knife - used for decapitating gingerbread men who come to life (think of Indianna Jones boulder scene).
Forbidden cook book – to start of the story as a pre-cautionary warning for the audience. (audio from a radio or television can be played during this shot). Has dust when it first appears.
Old fashion fridge – has pictures and cards from RRhood to establish their relationship.
Rotary Telephone – to contact RRHood end the end.
set:
1950s kitchen
ginger
Colors: bright brown
concept: running around like a chicken with its head cut off
perspectives:
-sees granny as a creepy ghoul (like Dracula)
-sees the wolf as a lumbering dark silhouette with a psychedelic background.
-sees the lamb as some weird gross retarded creature.
sets:
Inside stove
Kitchen
Woods
Lamb
Environments (scene laundry list):
/*-- have a prelude of the audience getting read to? Like a children’s bedtime story before they go to sleep?
If there’s a voice over during the prolog/prelude, have it drone out when transitioning to title screen to simulate falling asleep while listening
/*-- shapes of networks and synapses fluxuating for title screen
01 - Metro – RRhood riding train staring off into window watching the powerlines pass by
/*-- transition between powerlines and trees with train route map for possible credits insert
02 - Kitchen - title screen with introduction of characters.
03 - Bus – RRhood in limbo – the bus represents her state of mind
04 - Panic Room – BWCW is observing his monitors, he notices a shadow moving in the woods
05 - Stove – creation of gingerbread man
Kitchen – ginger running away from danger
06 - Woods – ginger runs pass a stoned wolf who realizes he’s hungry. Ginger is running like a maniac before it trips over to find something.
07 - City Bus Stop – RRhood gets let off at her stop. She walks through a city until a cute little lamb crosses her path.
Alley way – she follows the lamb
08 - Panic room – bwcw notices the lamb on his monitor surveillance. He looks to his right notices the door is open and he freaks out before deciding to look for his lost lamb.
09 - Woods – wolf encounters ginger. Ginger freaks out and pulls a revolver and shoots the wolf mortally injuring him. RRHood hears the gunshot and worries about the lamb and heads towards the source, while ginger runs away from the scene of the crime.
10- Bwcw may be struggling with the sunlight as he’s walking through the forest, he may put on a pair of sunglasses to cope against the sunlight.
11 - RRhood finds the wolf’s mortally wounded body; he is shot and needs medical attention. She pulls out her cell phone, but before she makes a call for an ambulance, she checks the body to see if the victim is still alive.
12 - Hospital – ending scene with RRhood and wolf. RRhood gets a call from Granny telling her that she’s late and needs to get there now. She leaves in a panic like she’s about to get grounded. The wolf is in a daze, but unluckily for him there’s a pair of authorities at his bedside where he’s been drug tested without his consent while unconscious.
13 - Metro – RRhood on train
14 - Woods – ginger still wandering the woods and encounters lamb. Ginger has no line of defenses and get eaten by lamb. BWCW finds lamb, picks him up, “where have you been?” lamb answers “mehhhh~” as bwcw carries lamb away from camera, we see the lambs underbelly between the arms of bwcw. Zoom in closer on lambs underbelly to see something glowing, and to reveal the lambs body being processed.
Story structure/outline:
Opening credits with introduction of characters (maybe using a forbidden recipe book?).
Starts off with Granny taking out an old dusty recipe book and puts it on the kitchen counter. She blows off dust to reveal a bunch of seals, warning the audience the dangers of using this book. She struggles with it while the camera cuts to environment shots. We see a fridge with pictures and cards from RRhood and Granny, establishing their relationship.
Cut to extreme close-up of her finally opening the book by ripping it.
She flips through the pages: a title page, table of contents, a page describing how to make a gingerbread man
Have a lithograph picture of a girl sitting lying along the page and use it as a transition to RRhood’s scene.
Metaphors with environments:
Bus/Train – State of limbo – represent boredom mood of a young teenager, waiting to get from point A to point B. This mode of transportation is connected to a network, and is a transition from the civilized world of order and predictability to the woods of the unknown and subconscious.
City – civilized society, represents the sacrifice we make in order to live safely among one another.
Telephone lines – a symbol of a long distance connection
Panic room – the ever omnipresent viewer that watches but refuses to take action or interact with what’s in front of them.
Woods – a state of the unknown. The thing we once feared before the rise of civilization, anything can happen in the woods, and no one can truly consider it safe, contain it, or keep it controlled (except maybe as a park?).
1950s kitchen – where things get chopped up and served for consumption.
stove/oven – a source of creation mainly for food
alley – the middle ground between the city and woods, a transition path that’s leads into the unknown, the woods.
Hospital- a place of misfortune and bad news
Colors:
Treatment - Instead of applying color on stageset or on characters to mean something, I might render characters and backgrounds normally, but have a post-editing to tint the picture for color themes for each environment/character.
Hospital – greens and blues? Desaturated white and blue? (look at color treatment on ER to get some referencing ideas)
Opposite – black and saturated orange (Halloween colors)
City – desaturated greys
Opposite – saturated colors – similar what’s scene in French films
Woods – beer bottle green and dark blue
Opposites – Bright Red and reflector orange
Panic room – dark blue room due to the character living in darkness
Opposite – neon orange
RRhood and Train – rose/pink/red – a girl in her youth who is looking for love.
Opposite - Zombie film green
Granny – yellow & green – something sick & and disturbing is going on while Granny is trying to be cheerful knowing that her grand daughter is visiting
Opposite – purple & red
Stove – Darkness/Black the unknown
Opposite - white
Scene ideas:
-creation of gingerbread man inside the oven (RE2 + akira mutation scene + star wars op)
-gets taken out of oven (reference to martyr position?)
-why does the granny have to make the gingerbread man? Is it RRhood’s favorite cookie? Relate gingerbread man with RRhood, maybe while she’s on her cellphone she mentions it. Maybe granny wants to try a new recipe for ginger while she comes over to help her out.
-Have a warning of needing to decapitate ginger before they get up to run away and maybe something extra at the bottom of the page that doesn’t get revealed.
-BWCW is in a panic room watching his computer monitors (like L from Death Note) while the lamb is frolicking in the forward ground.
-before RRhood enters the woods have some sort of sign (similar in the Silent Hill movie)
-what are the colors for the props relating to communication? What the colors are for props, what do they represent?
-have cellphone go off before end of scene with RRhood and wolf?
-off-tune sirens from ambulance?
-Have cellphone go off in beginning of RRhood scene 01
-screen wipe transition with a computer circuit board inbetween representing technology with the characters – one huge network. Life on a circuit board.
-F.U.C.K. – that’s when you know things are NOT okay~
-the wire network pattern on a circuit board can be assimilated in the structure of tree branches
-if everything were connected like a network, think of things that relate to this theme: telephone lines, maps for subway systems (insert characters names for destinations), circuit boards, tree branches, lightening bolts
-the woods can represent the network between people and the common ground for all the characters to meet up for their out-of-control occurrences
-the subway or train is a metaphor for the state of limbo we’re in when waiting to connect from point A to point B. all trains and subways are linked together in some network form, and this can be associated with the connections between from city to forest
-a panic room is a network in a way of connecting visual landmarks to one common place for a viewer to see
-telephone or phone lines deal with audio connections traveling along long distances to reach an ear for a connective desire.
-radio or televisions are mass populous forms of communication, where things are localized in context for a massive audience for understand and register to.
-rhythm of intro similar to GITS op (with title credits) with characters granny, ginger, and RRhood? How do these three events going on simultaneously relate? What do they have in common in the theme of “beginning”?
-what is it you want the establishing shot to establish?
-they’re all related how?
-what do I hope to say to the audience with it? Connection
action in film that represents connection, and reiterate it
-rrhood telephone lines - kitchen scene granny plugging something in (what is this thing she’s connection?)? (telephone lines passing by transition into trees from the woods to cross over into granny scene) (connection)
10 ways to do everything n life
hypnagogic imagery
rough story
comtemperaneously – all at the sametime (storyboards (elements using) + references) = progression reel – tying down without editing later
8 ½ - Federico fellini – making a film he avoids he want to make (dream sequence avoiding responsibilities)
-can but rough cut for mock animatic for order and put drawings in later for timing
-shooting script || narrative – create script with panels and scripts next to it – document to stay organized
-sound – theremin – 1920s antiquated feel, electronic, kinda dreamy
collect sounds you might find – to use in a non-particular way – older than 70 years to be safe to be safe – 1930s 1940s – public domain
j-pop – look up music – write and ask people – ask the people musicians + composer + publishing company + recording company + heirs of estate || sold music rights to someone else (ex: Michael Jackson owns rights to beatles music) … need to get perpretual liscenes - know anyone who can do style – best to go through them & get their release form
several major differences in song – similar and feel is fine
shounen knife
music ideas:
intro – prologue scene with into reading – Scarface – Tony’s Theme – Voice Over in Stephen Hawkings voice, like an old retro video game
RRhood scene – Reversed Big O - Tears
Granny + Ginger scene – KOR – Night of Summer Side

Ideas for Lullaby Follies Trailer (for April 29 deadline)
If I were to make a trailer for Lullaby Follies, I would have the style like this Evangelion: Death and Rebirth trailer, along with the intense emotional roller coaster ride that comes with it.
Maybe like this Battle Royale trailer too.

Short Introduction
I’m currently in my final year here at the College for Creative Studies and it feels like a long journey overall, but that might be due to the fact I have spent 3 years previously at a university before coming to this school. So six years of my life has dwindled away in my attempt for an undergraduate degree. I don’t know whether or not I would pursue a master’s degree. Frankly I don’t see myself as having enough professional experience to justify the cause. I don’t even know if I want to enter the entertainment field after this educational experience. The thought of being tied down by deadlines and contracts is not something I’m looking forward to. For now, let’s focus on what needs to be done, and worry about the future when that chance comes along.
Why did I decide to come to this school?
It’s funny to say what caught my attention about the College for Creative Studies. It was an in-class mishap of being nosey while students where talking about attending an IDSA conference that was held over at CCS. Beforehand, I’ve never considered the school, figuring it to be too artsy or a waste of time and money. But when I saw a picture of a Trans Design student’s cubical, I was amazed by the quality behind their drawings. It made me question my current situation and education, and to consider it if I ever had a second chance.
Well, that chance came. The university I was attending decided to cut its Industrial Design department by stating the school’s “lack of funds.” Two brand new buildings were being built on campus while I.D. students were informed on their current dilemma. My options were to graduate from a school that would no longer have representation or a legacy behind its degree, or transfer to Wayne, Kendall, or CCS. CCS was the least possible option, due to its cost, but seemed the most worth while due to its legacy. Somehow luck was on my side and my funds barely made it to attend CCS as a part-time transfer student. I lost a significant amount of credits, by switching from an engineering school to a school of fine arts, but in the back of my mind I was telling myself “this school will be worth the loss.”
Why did I decide to go into animation?
When I was in Industrial Design, I noticed I was more interested in drawing the human figure than sketching cars and toasters. I enjoyed coming up with stories for things that don’t exist. So while I’m compulsive for intricate ideas and designs behind my work, I also enjoy the looseness behind a doodle that lasts milliseconds on screen. The only regret I have in choosing this path is the lack of emphasis on a technical drawing skill set, which one will find in Illustration or in Industrial Design.
Having second thoughts?
Yes and no.
Yes, due to the fact stated above, there is no emphasis on a technical drawing skill set in the Animation department.
I don’t see an emphasis on conceptual design behind the details of a character or environment. I believe in precision down to the lace. I’ve been finding myself during my free time (if I can find any) doing lots of reference studies, in order to train my eyes to look for and remember details. Current conceptual design idols such as Syd Mead or Iain McCraig emphasize the importance behind continuously drawing life studies and drawing from reference, as the initial step in the conceptual design process. So I find myself endlessly drawing for school and drawing for myself, sort of tripling my drawing load than the standard student. Is this possible? I’m uncertain, but I do it anyway, because it’s what needs to be done to achieve my wishful desire in drawing ability.
No, to second thoughts, due to the fact I have found something in animation I did not anticipate, which is self-expression.
The ability to sketch fast and throw away drawings for something that’ll be projected onto a screen in a short period of time, provides a chance of freedom by not worrying about perfection behind a drawing. Instead, motion and gesture is emphasized through time (24 fps) and space (12-inch field guide), hitting on things that are important with the lesser details aiding in the background.
When I draw for animation, I let that blank sheet of paper seep into my mind, to play with the in-class objective that has been thrown onto me, and then splatter out from an inner hidden emotion. This emotion gets drawn out in a rough manner, causing the character I’m drawing to live in a brief moment before I run out-of-time due to a deadline. The interesting thing happens is when the audience gets to see this character I drew go through my inner emotion, and somehow they respond to it immediately by the rhythm of action.
This connection between hidden actor and imposing on an audience is something I have never cared for until animation. Animation provides a chance to express inner feelings and lusts into a workable format, where my imagination is free to roam among the paper’s parameters. The audience can join me in my journey when I’m finished with the animation, and we experience my inner-self together. The way they respond is like telling a good story, they’ll respond when you inspire them to, and I find great satisfaction in that.
What have I been looking for?
Things I find myself doing or applying myself to do when going through the creative process.
Self-Background (write out later)
-Short introduction on self history
-Looking at colleges in High School. Wanting to go into the games industry but finding no clear path at the time (Computer Science).
-Deciding to go to WMU
-Going through majors. Finding what fits me / self-exploration (Industrial Design)
-Change of plans (cancellation of major and looking at alternatives)
-Current residence in Detroit and attending CCS in animation.
Senior Year (currently writing)
-Why did I decide to attend this college?
-Why did I decide to go into animation?

Ginger Bread Man Design Development - Post I
The bubbling of the eye I might use for this creation scene
Might use this mouth thing when the is alive and moving inside the stove.
The way this sack pulls out a revolver - I might apply to the Wolf and Gingerbread man scene.
The way the slime occasionally bubbles, I might apply to the cookie dough when it starts baking inside the oven.
The way the eye opens in this Resident Evil 2 OP I might apply to the cookie dough when its comes to life.
The style of the running sequence 0:27 to 0:37 - I might apply when the Granny and Gingerbread Man encounter each other.
To represented an exaggerated form of paranoia, I'm using the Gingerbread Man character as a hallucinated perception of each character the Gingerbread man encounters.
For the exaggeration of the Granny, I would like her to have a Hammer Horror feel to her, like in Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stroker's Dracula. The design of the older Dracula in this movie, I'll try to incorperate into the scene or design in some way.
If the wolf character were to talk during the gingerbread encounter, I would like it to sound like this music video (starting on 0:50).
Boy who cried wolf Design Development - Post I

Pose and clothing studies
Concept for attitude and expression of character.
When the BWCW crosses paths with the Wolf, I would like him to act like this.
I've had a change of plans with the BWCW character. Instead of being a snobby stuck-up rich kid, I've decided to turn him into a reclusive paranoid individual who refuses to go outside, living inside a panic room (agoraphobia?). He has a small pet lamb, which lends him comapny in this closed in environment.
BWCW's relationship with his pet lamb should be something similar to this Buffalo Bill's character and his tiny pet dog.
